There is a certain feeling you only get inside a New England estate.
Maybe it is the sound of an old floorboard beneath your feet, sunlight coming through wavy antique glass, a beautiful dining room that has hosted generations of family dinners, or the unmistakable smell of the ocean drifting through an open window. We grew up surrounded by that feeling, in and around the charming coastal communities of Mystic, Watch Hill, New London, Old Saybrook, Groton Long Point, and Gales Ferry. Countless Summers on Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Block Island, and Winter Skiiing Adventures in the Vermont Woods. We have traveled, explored beautiful places, and fallen in love with homes and treasures from around the world, but we always come back to the same thought:
Nothing quite compares to the architecture, craftsmanship, character, and soul of a New England estate.
And the smell of the mighty salty New England Sea? We consider that the original New England room freshener. 🌊
Where the Treasure Hunt Began
Long before there was a shop, a website, or a business called New England Estate Sale, there were weekends at my grandmother and grandfather’s old New England farmhouse in the little town of Riverhead, Long Island, minutes from The exclusively beautiful Hamptons.
The property was its own little world, filled with barns, surrounded by water, family, food, pontoon boats, and endless places to explore.
While my father worked alongside my grandfather, building beautiful Adirondack chairs in one of the many barns, my sister and I would disappear into another.
Right before dinner, my father and grandfather would head out to check the eel traps, eventually bringing home fresh eel to barbecue on the grill. Inside the house, my mother and grandmother would prepare fresh mussels in my grandmother’s European kitchen, which overlooked the very salty waters where those mussels came from.
There was usually a party barge involved, too, and adventures out to Starfish Island.
But for my sister and me, the real adventure was waiting upstairs.
We would climb into the attic of one of the barns, where we found a world of forgotten treasures. We could spend hours up there dusting things off, examining them, inventing stories about where they came from, who had owned them, what they had seen, and where they might belong next.
We were learning how to imagine.
Those afternoons taught me something I would carry with me for the rest of my life: a beautiful old object can be much more than an object. It can be a doorway into an adventure. It can wake up your imagination. It can make you curious. It can connect you to another person, another generation, or even a version of yourself you had forgotten.
That childhood treasure hunt became part of the inspiration for our original retail concept, The Manifestorium, and that same spirit has continued to grow into New England Estate Sale.

We created this space because we want something to happen when you walk through our doors or browse our website.

Maybe you see an old piece of china and suddenly think of your grandmother. Maybe a painting reminds you of a house you grew up in. Maybe you find something that belonged to someone you loved who is no longer in this dimension, and somehow that little treasure brings their beautiful memory rushing back to life.
That moment is priceless.

Yes, we love shopping. And yes, we work very hard to bring you exceptional inventory, thoughtful prices, and an experience that makes treasure hunting genuinely fun.

Our brick-and-mortar shop in Stonington, Connecticut is where the treasure hunt comes to life. Our website simply brings that experience to your fingertips.
You can discover one or two special New England estate pieces from wherever you are and choose to pick them up or have them shipped to your door.
For shipped purchases, we bring your carefully packed treasure to a UPS drop-off location, while you purchase shipping directly through UPS. This gives you a direct relationship with the carrier and UPS coverage for your shipment. If there is a shipping issue or breakage, you can work directly with UPS rather than waiting for us to navigate an insurance claim. For one-of-a-kind antiques and vintage treasures, we believe that is the smarter way to shop online.
